20 Questions

Have you ever played "20 Questions" with anyone? Willingly or unwillingly? That's what starting a soccer club is like. It's a constant barrage of questions to answer.

Where will you be located? Will you be non profit or for profit? What does your bylaws encompass? Who are your board members? What about your coaching staff? What programs will you offer? What age groups will you include?

And there is always that one question that inevitably gets asked you never have a good answer for... Why are you doing this?

So many questions are easy to answer and some take a little more thought and calculation. But the one thing that is near impossible to answer is the "Why?".

It's hard to put into words something you decided to do because it felt right. Because you knew it was where your future was meant to go; it's natural path.

When I left the club I volunteered with, I knew before I sent the email resigning that I couldn't leave soccer. Leaving the club was hard enough, sending the email was like sending away a small part of myself. I had spent years helping and devoted hours upon hours trying to help move it forward only to be pushed aside. It was time away from my family, long and sleepless nights, and so much energy; just to be wasted in the end. Though I wouldn't change a moment of it.

But to leave soccer.? How could I walk away from that? The relationships I'd built with players and coaches; watching players grow and develop and find a future through soccer; being able to encourage players both on and off the field.

CMH isn't just about offering players somewhere to play for fun. Our goal is to help players find a passion for the sport and to support their drive to take soccer to college and beyond. We want to help players see that there are so many possibilities out there. Playing college, semi-pro, aiming for a spot on a professional team, finding a career that lets you use your love for soccer; these are the things we aim to help with.

The "Why?" is hard to answer and even harder to grasp if you don't love it, if you don't have a passion for the sport, the players.

In the game of "20 questions", when asked "why?", we answered "why not?".
